Sometimes a business needs an IT manager before it needs another IT technician.
Growing organisations often reach a point where technology needs ownership: someone to set priorities, manage risk, challenge suppliers and create a plan rather than simply respond when something breaks.
What an outsourced IT manager can own
- IT strategy and technology roadmap
- Cybersecurity risk and improvement priorities
- Microsoft 365 and cloud direction
- Supplier and contract review
- Backup and business continuity planning
- Hardware lifecycle and budgeting
- Projects, migrations and office changes
- Policies, standards and documentation
- Management reporting and technical decision support
IT manager, virtual IT director or MSP?
They solve related but different problems. An MSP provides the operational team and managed services. An IT manager or virtual IT director provides ownership, prioritisation and management-level direction. For many SMEs the strongest model combines both.
My role
As founder of 39D, I understand both sides. I can work with business owners and management teams on technology decisions while the wider 39D team provides the ongoing managed service needed to implement and support those decisions.
A practical approach
The objective is not to create a large IT strategy document that sits on a shelf. It is to identify the important risks and opportunities, decide what should happen first and make sure someone remains accountable for delivery.
